And in keeping you healthy, Big Pharma, the FDA, and insurance companies seem seem to drive most medical practitioners more than science. The medical establishment is woefully ignorant and last-to-know when it comes to anything except repairing a broken body. To get the best care possible we should want the doctors medical degree and a patient’s proactive participation in their healthcare. Google offers a lot of value (even to doctors who use it) and a doctor’s medical degree offers a ton of value as well. At the end of the day, it really comes down to mutual respect for each other and collaboration to achieve the best outcomes. Patients should search Google for information and be proactive in their care, but they can also do it in a respectful way. The reality is that doctors can’t know everything and the pressures of our healthcare system make it hard for them, but doctors should respect patients who are proactive in their care. It makes sense why doctors could have some skepticism around what patients find in their Google searches. Google said the patient was going to die from some illness no patient has ever heard about. Google and worried themselves needlessly over something that was diagnosed simply by the doctor even though Dr. Plus, doctors can recount hundreds of stories of patients who have researched their hearts out on Dr. The 15 minute paradigm doesn’t leave much space for doctors to listen to patients. While these are both true, that’s not an excuse for patients to take it so far that they’re disrespectful to clinicians that are trying to help them which is what happens sometimes. We know of a lot of patients who have done their own research and been proactive patients and saved their lives. Plus, we know a lot of stories of patients who haven’t been listened to by doctors and have had adverse results. Some patients take their Google searches too far and treat clinicians poorly because they think they know better. The reality is that both sides of this discussion have important points to make. The internet has a lot of info if it helps you understand your health better, use it! ![]() I can’t believe I have to clarify this but this is mocking those who actually get upset when patients do their own research. Naina even followed up with this clarification of the intent of the tweet: ![]() The reaction to the above tweet was really interesting and worthy of a read to understand a lot of the angles of this conversation. PLEASE do NOT confuse your GOOGLE SEARCH with my MEDICAL DEGREE because the GOOGLE knows MORE than ME and is definitely MUCH betterįor those following along at home, this is a twist of a popular meme that’s gone around the internet and is often shared by doctors that says “Please Do Not Confuse Your Google Search With My Medical Degree.” In fact, you can get it on a mug if you’d like. It should come as no surprise that I see and understand many of the angles this conversation takes. Although, ironically, the title for this article came from an MS3. Who doesn’t like a little controversy to start your Monday? Ok, I know that the title is going to irk a number of doctors. While Glow is predominately meant for fractal art, I have found several uses for it outside the fractal realm. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just part of the learning curve with a new piece of software. I will venture to say we will see quite a few “one click wonders” until the masses figure out a way to incorporate it in their workflow. If it is not used as a subtle element in a photo, it will be easy to spot as a filter. This is a program that will pique the interest of the individuals who want to “Electrify” their photos or designs. Those who do not own Photoshop will be pleased that this also installs as a stand alone program that does not require Photoshop to use. While the fractal effect is niche in many cases to a select group of artistic individuals, Glow can be used in subtle ways to enhance the overall look and feel of an image without the fractal effect. The presets in Glow are effective and if not good for one click use, they are well on their way! I use many of them as a jumping off point and only have to skew the adjustments slightly to obtain the desired effect. This makes the learning curve for the program rather low so you will be on your way with the effects in no time. ![]() The effects are not hidden behind fancy words, what you read is what it does. If pain really is my sister, then Vicodin is my brother. I look forward to the pure escape, the heady rush-and not just the gift of painlessness but the opportunity for joy. Any fool would be, although there’s more to it, since I’m also afraid of the Vicodin-mostly of losing the Vicodin. Still, only one truth comes out, no matter how I use it: When I don’t take Vicodin, I live in pain.Īnd I’m afraid of the pain. No matter how I use it: When I don’t take Vicodin, I live in pain.Ĭonversely, I have buckled down and refused to give it out or veer from my prescription for weeks at a time. I’ve ignored the warning stickers and doled it out to friends and relatives for every manner of reason-injury and hangover, curiosity and redemption, because they asked for it, because it works, because I wanted someone to know the Vike. I’ve doubled the dosage on my prescription label routinely. I have taken it in every conceivable combination and dosage. I dream about Vicodin when I’m not taking it. Going off it, which I did once for two weeks, leaves me sleepless, shaky, testy, and dry-mouthed. While I was writing a departmental report last spring, I found that I could not sit up in a straight-backed chair to write. Last summer, I took two so I could stand in the ocean without fear of a big wave, then took another one when I got out so I could lie in the sun without stiffening in agony. I once took six to get through a round of golf. ![]() I usually take two a day, but I’ve taken as many as eight in a day when things got really bad. I started on the standard, plain-Jane 5-milligram dose after a car accident and moved to the stronger, 7.5-milligram Vicodin ES (which stands, sensibly, for extra-strength) following my subsequent surgery. I’ve been on and off Vicodin for almost a year and a half. Loyal, intimate, the sort of friend who whispers to you while you’re sleeping or just as you wake. They tell stories, give warnings and admonitions. But within days, the same doctors want to ease you off the Vike. What they’re hoping is that you’ll get a leash on your pain, gain control of it. They might start you out hard-say, two 5-milligram tablets every four hours. Doctors set you up on Vicodin when you’re so badly hurt, cut so deeply, damaged so thoroughly, that you can’t stand it. I’m here to tell you, they take it because it works. It is the painkiller of choice for thousands of drug users, legal and illegal both. You can listen to hers, too, and dispense advice with acuity and sympathy in equal measure. You want to slide up and tell the barmaid your troubles. The full-out Vicodin hum is like the enormous relief that follows a really fine shit. It slickens you, sends you loose against your pain, so you loll and roll in the wake of your old mood like a flag on a pole in the middle of June. Vicodin, my Vicodin, is a wet pleasure if there ever was one. “If you dig that out,” she said, “we’ll know you have a problem.” I haven’t. She told me about it at dinner that night. Last week, my wife vacuumed a Vicodin off the floor of our bedroom. There’s a half of one in the bottle of Tylenol in the downstairs bathroom, four in the glove box of my black car, six in my white car, and one on top of a paint can in the basement. There's one Vicodin in the breast pocket of my black suit, six in my desk drawer at work, two in my golf bag, and thirty-three in the bottle in my medicine cabinet. I can't remember where I spent last Christmas, But I know where all my Vicodin are. I have no idea where my passport is or my birth certificate or the photographs from my wedding.
